Ain’t no one like this toilet paper roll but this toilet paper roll. When you’re out for a walk on a cool autumn evening, grab a small pine cone to make this Rocket Raccoon upcycled craft with the kids!
What You Need
- Toilet paper roll
- Black, white, brown, and orange paint
- Black enamel dot stickers (like these from Doodlebug)
- Small pine cone
- Hot glue gun
- Paint brush
- Brown cardstock or construction paper
Begin by painting the top 1/4 of the toilet paper roll brown, and the bottom 3/4 orange. Painting the inside 1/4 of the roll brown will also give Rocket a cleaner look.
Allow to dry completely.
While you’re waiting for the roll to dry, paint the tip of the small pine cone white, and add two black stripes to create Rocket’s tail.
Begin painting Rocket’s face by making two large black stripes. If you need a reference, take a look at this image from the new Guardians of the Galaxy animated series from Disney.
Paint a small white circle beneath the black stripes.
Allow the black paint to dry a little to prevent smearing. Add the white eyebrows next. (Mine came out rather cute; you and your kids might prefer to make Rocket a little angrier with the eyebrows.)
While the face is drying, cut two small triangles of the brown paper for the ears. Use the white paint to add an outline on the edges.
Next, add the details on the sides of Rocket’s suit with the black paint. (This is another good time to check the image above for reference.) If your kids are painting Rocket, this is a nice opportunity to talk about symmetry as they line up the design on both sides of the body.
Add the black trapezoid shape to the bottom front of Rocket’s suit as well.
Use the end of the paintbrush to make two dots of white for Rocket’s eyes.
Next, stick the small enamel dot on for his nose. If you don’t want to spend money on the stickers, a bit of black paint will also do.
Once the white dots are dry, use the end of the paintbrush again for the black dots of his eyes. Allow to dry.
Glue the ears to the inside front of the roll.
Finally, use the hot glue gun to attach the pine cone tail to the back of the toilet paper roll.
Your Guardian of the Galaxy is complete!
