Force Friday is almost here! You need some place to put all those new The Force Awakens toys you’re going to pick up, so why not make your own toy box? Just a few things from around the house and black paint transform a shoebox into a toy box featuring one of Episode VII’s most intriguing characters, Captain Phasma.
This craft is inspired by this ingenious glue and foil bird portrait.
What You Need
- Aluminum foil
- School glue
- Glue stick
- Black Sharpie marker
- Black construction paper and scissors (optional)
- Black acrylic paint or shoe polish
Begin by drawing Captain Phasma’s helmet with the black Sharpie marker. You might want to use a pencil first if you want to be extra careful! I found it easier to begin with the helmet shape, and then drawing a line across for the eyes.
Finish the helmet drawing. It doesn’t have to be perfect as you won’t see it — it’s only used as a guide for the next step.
Trace the lines you drew with the school glue.
Allow the glue to dry completely, ideally overnight.
While you’re waiting for the glue, use black construction paper, the aluminum foil, or even Star Wars wrapping paper to cover the bottom part of the shoebox.
Once the glue has dried completely clear, use the glue stick to cover the entire lid of the box.
Next, tear a piece of aluminum foil and wrap the lid in foil. Don’t make it too big or too thick on the underside of the lid, or your box won’t close!
Press the foil down firmly, rubbing the lid so that the dried glue is visible through the foil.
Next, use a paint brush or paper towel to rub the black paint or shoe polish across the top of the lid.
You might want to paint two coats, depending on your preference for how it looks.
Allow the paint to dry completely, and your toy box is complete!
