The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, a new comic book series from Marvel, is an all-ages story featuring a confident, strong superheroine who is part-girl, part-squirrel, and all-fun. Until the happy day Marvel Comics makes a Squirrel Girl action figure my daughter can play with, I used a toilet paper roll to create a little Doreen Green doll to join Barbie on some nutty adventures.
What You’ll Need
- Toilet paper roll
- Dark brown, gray, light brown or tan, and gold cardstock or construction paper
- Large brown pom-poms
- Hot glue
- Black marker
To begin, cut the following strips of paper for Squirrel Girl’s costume and tape them in this order to the “back” of the roll. (Free free to adjust the measurements to best fit whichever brand of toilet paper roll you’re using.) Leave enough room at the top of the roll for Squirrel Girl’s face and hair.
- Grey, 1″ x 6″ – Squirrel Girl’s tights
- Light brown, 2″ x 6″, leotard
- Light brown, 1/2″ x 6″, boots
- Gold, 1/4″ x 6″, belt
Next, cut a dark brown strip 1 1/2″ x 6″ and fold the ends to create her jacket. Wrap the jacket back to front to cover the taped paper in the back, and use the hot glue to hold it in place. (Watch those fingers!)
Next, cut a gold strip about 1/2″ x 6″ to craft Squirrel Girl’s hair. Use your scissors to cut a wavy style in the edges to get her short haircut looking just right. Tape the hair in the back of the roll.
Cut two small dark brown squirrel ears and attach them to her hair with tape.
Next, grab the glue gun again to stick three (or more!) large brown pom-poms to the back side of the roll to create her tail.
(I originally glued the tail before adding her hair — don’t make the same mistake!)
Finally, use the black marker to draw a little face for Doreen. Make it as cute or silly as you’d like, but don’t forget her signature toothy smile!
